Obesity is a chronic and metabolic disease that has increased greatly in the last two decades, leading to a real epidemic that affects most developed and developing countries. Worldwide, the number of obesity cases has doubled since 1980. By 2014, there were 1.9 billion overweight adults, of whom more than 600 million were obese. Most of the world's population lives in countries where the number of obesity deaths exceeds the number of low-weight deaths. The projection of the World Health Organization is that, by the year 2025, obesity will reach 700 million adults and 75 million children. In comorbidity with obesity are cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders and some neoplasms such as endometrial, breast, ovary, prostate, liver, gallbladder, kidney and colon. Obesity, as well as diseases related to it, are preventable and can be treated. Bariatric surgery is an invasive form of treatment of this disease and requires multidisciplinary accompaniment with an educational character to change the lifestyle. Adherence to healthier lifestyles may aid in the treatment of this disease and in the recovery of the surgical procedure. Thus, this special issue aims to receive research related to the treatment of obesity and strategies to minimize such disease and its comorbidities.
